The BSD license is Free Open Source Software, with perhaps the least requirements on use short of a full public domain release, consisting merely of a warranty disclaimer and notice retention.

Development:

  • System V license costs too high
  • 1981 – UCB and Bill Joy (later developed Java) develop 4.1BSD for DARPA
  • Write own TCP/IP to free it from System V
  • BSD is now free open source software
