The Apache web server was perhaps the first big FOSS success for enterprise level software. With almost no fanfare, it quickly became the standard for web server software, and has retained majority share ever since, mainly because it is free, rock solid, capable, and has globally shared use, development, and support.

The Apache Software Foundation provides support for the Apache community of open-source software projects. The Apache projects are characterized by a collaborative, consensus based development process, an open and pragmatic software license, and a desire by community of developers and users to create high quality software that leads the way in its field.
