- "The Eclipse technology is a vendor-neutral, open development platform supplying frameworks and exemplary, extensible tools."
- - Eclipse Bylaws
The Eclipse project is one of the most successful FOSS projects of all time, providing a great open development platform whose support and improvement is shared by a large community of businesses, organizations, and individuals.
In the beginning originally a software initiative started by IBM in a lab in Ottawa, Canada, it became clear there was potential to establish an open development platform, and so IBM farsightedly open sourced the value that had been created worth untold millions of dollars. Today, IBM earns many hundreds of millions of dollars a year from providing value add products and services to customers benefiting from the now much larger, powerful Eclipse ecosystem.
The Eclipse platform includes extensible frameworks, tools, and runtimes for building, deploying, and managing software across the lifecycle. A large and active community of major technology vendors, start-ups, academic and research institutions, and individuals support and extend the Eclipse platform, with major updates annually.
