"GNOME creates software for a better world. We achieve this by behaving well towards each other."
- GNOME Code Of Conduct

GNOME was originally created by some techie enthusiasts in 1996 as a GUI control infrastructure for Unix, aimed at helping develop an interactive desktop interface. They tried contributing it to the KDE project, but it was disqualified because it was then dependent on the underlying non-free Qt software. It became a separate initiative, and now along with KDE is one of the two main FOSS desktop environments available today. Mostly released under the Lessor GPL.
