The PostgreSQL database management system has long been one of the sleeper hits of the open source world, kind of like the Apache web server. PostgreSQL provides rock-solid, standard compliant, performant back-end database functionality capable of dealing with terabytes of information. It is all FOSS, released under the near maximally open BSD License.
